Batman v Superman: Funeral for a Friend – Snyderverse Analysis

Scene 1 — “Who Made Sure I Stayed Away?”

The living room fell silent.

Jack stood in the doorway, still wearing his white Navy uniform. The bouquet of red roses lay scattered across the hardwood floor. Emily stood near the couch, her face pale, while Ryan looked as if he had just realized he had made the biggest mistake of his life.

Jack stared at Ryan.

JACK: “You said someone made sure I wouldn't come home when I was supposed to. Who?”

Ryan opened his mouth, but Emily rushed forward.

EMILY: “Jack, please. You have to understand something before you do anything.”

Jack turned toward her slowly.

JACK: “Understand what, Emily? That my wife has been keeping secrets from me? That my best friend knows something about my deployment that I don't?”

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

EMILY: “I never wanted things to happen this way.”

Jack gave a bitter laugh.

JACK: “That's funny. Because from where I'm standing, it looks like everyone knew what was happening except me.”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

RYAN: “Jack, I swear to you, I never wanted to hurt you.”

JACK: “Then start telling the truth.”

Ryan glanced at Emily. She shook her head almost imperceptibly.

Jack noticed.

JACK: “Don't look at her. Look at me.”

Ryan finally met his eyes.

RYAN: “Three months ago, I received a phone call from someone at the base. They told me your deployment schedule had changed. Your return date was pushed back.”

Jack frowned.

JACK: “I know my orders changed. My commanding officer told me it was an operational decision.”

RYAN: “That wasn't the whole story.”

Jack took a step closer.

JACK: “Then what was the whole story?”

Ryan swallowed hard.

RYAN: “The person who requested the change knew you personally.”

Emily suddenly covered her mouth.

Jack looked at her.

JACK: “Emily?”

She said nothing.

JACK: “What did you do?”

Before Emily could answer, Ryan reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

RYAN: “I saved the message. I thought I might need it someday.”

He unlocked the phone and held it out.

Jack stared at the screen.

The message was short, but the name at the top made his blood run cold.

VICTORIA HAYES — JACK'S MOTHER.

Scene 2 — The Mother Who Knew Everything

Jack shook his head in disbelief.

JACK: “My mother?”

Ryan nodded.

RYAN: “She contacted me because she wanted to talk about your marriage. She said she was worried about you. She thought Emily was hiding something.”

Jack looked at Emily.

JACK: “Was she right?”

Emily wiped her tears.

EMILY: “Your mother never liked me. From the day we got married, she tried to convince you that I wasn't good enough for you.”

JACK: “That doesn't explain why she contacted Ryan.”

Ryan took a deep breath.

RYAN: “She asked me to keep an eye on Emily while you were away. She said she had evidence that Emily was planning to leave you.”

Jack stared at him.

JACK: “And you agreed?”

RYAN: “At first, I thought I was helping you.”

JACK: “So you came into my house, spent time with my wife, and decided you knew what was best for me?”

Ryan had no answer.

Emily stepped forward.

EMILY: “Jack, I need you to know something. Your mother came to see me two weeks after you left.”

Jack turned toward her.

JACK: “What?”

EMILY: “She told me that if I truly loved you, I would leave you. She said your career would suffer if you stayed married to me.”

Jack's expression hardened.

JACK: “She threatened you?”

EMILY: “She said she had people who could make things difficult for both of us.”

Ryan looked down at the floor.

RYAN: “She told me something similar. She said she was protecting you.”

Jack rubbed his forehead, struggling to process everything.

His mother had always been controlling. She had criticized Emily's clothes, her job, her cooking, and even the way she spoke to Jack.

But Jack had never imagined she would interfere with his military career.

JACK: “I'm calling her.”

He took out his phone.

Emily suddenly grabbed his wrist.

EMILY: “Don't!”

Jack looked down at her hand.

JACK: “Why not?”

Emily released him.

EMILY: “Because there's something else you need to see first.”

She walked toward the hallway and returned with a small brown envelope.

It was sealed.

On the front, written in familiar handwriting, were four words:

“FOR JACK. OPEN ALONE.”

Jack recognized the handwriting immediately.

It belonged to his father, who had died five years earlier.

Scene 3 — His Father's Last Warning

Jack held the envelope with trembling fingers.

JACK: “Where did you get this?”

Emily's voice became barely audible.

EMILY: “Your father gave it to me before he died.”

Jack looked at her in shock.

JACK: “You had a letter from my father for five years, and you never told me?”

EMILY: “He made me promise not to give it to you unless your mother tried to control your life again.”

Ryan stepped back, suddenly looking uncomfortable.

Jack slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter and an old photograph.

The photograph showed Jack's father standing beside a younger Victoria. Between them was a man Jack had never seen before.

On the back, his father had written:

“The truth about this family is not what you have been told.”

Jack unfolded the letter.

His father's words were simple.

Jack, if you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped you would never have to face.

Your mother has spent years protecting a secret. I once believed keeping that secret would protect our family. I was wrong.

There is a reason she has always tried to control your decisions, especially the people you love.

If she ever tries to separate you from your wife, find the man in this photograph.

His name is Thomas Reed.

He knows who you really are.

Jack stopped reading.

The room seemed to tilt around him.

JACK: “Who is Thomas Reed?”

Emily shook her head.

EMILY: “I don't know. Your father only gave me the envelope. He told me that one day you might need it.”

Jack examined the photograph again.

The man standing beside his father looked remarkably familiar.

Not because Jack had met him before.

Because he had seen that face somewhere recently.

Then Ryan spoke.

RYAN: “Jack… I know that man.”

Jack turned sharply.

JACK: “How?”

Ryan looked toward the front window, as if he expected someone to be watching them.

RYAN: “Because he came to the base three months ago.”

Scene 4 — The Phone Call

Jack grabbed Ryan's arm.

JACK: “Why didn't you tell me?”

RYAN: “Because I didn't know who he was at the time. He introduced himself as a family friend. He asked questions about your assignment, your return date, and whether you had received any unusual messages.”

Jack let go of him.

JACK: “And you told him?”

RYAN: “I told him nothing classified. But I did tell him when you were expected to return.”

Jack stepped away, overwhelmed.

His wife had hidden a letter. His best friend had been speaking to his mother. A stranger had been asking about his military schedule.

And somehow, all of it was connected.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID displayed one name.

MOM.

Nobody moved.

Jack answered and placed the phone against his ear.

JACK: “Hello, Mom.”

Victoria's voice sounded unusually calm.

VICTORIA: “Jack, sweetheart. I heard you're home.”

Jack looked at Ryan.

JACK: “Funny. I haven't called anyone to tell them.”

There was a brief silence on the other end.

VICTORIA: “Your friends talk too much.”

Jack's grip tightened around the phone.

JACK: “Did you contact someone to change my return schedule?”

VICTORIA: “I did what I thought was necessary.”

Jack stared into the distance.

JACK: “Necessary for what?”

Victoria sighed.

VICTORIA: “You don't understand what your father left behind. I spent years trying to protect you from it.”

JACK: “Protect me from what?”

Her voice suddenly became sharp.

VICTORIA: “Stay away from Thomas Reed.”

Jack's heart pounded.

He hadn't mentioned the name.

Not once.

JACK: “How do you know about Thomas?”

Victoria stopped speaking.

For several seconds, all Jack could hear was her breathing.

Then she whispered:

VICTORIA: “Because if you find him, you'll destroy this family.”

The call ended.

Jack slowly lowered his phone.

Emily was crying silently.

Ryan looked terrified.

Jack turned toward them.

JACK: “What did my father discover?”

Neither answered.

Then someone knocked on the front door.

Three slow, deliberate knocks.

Everyone froze.

Jack walked toward the entrance and looked through the narrow window beside the door.

An older man stood on the porch wearing a dark coat. His hair was gray, and he held a second envelope in his hand.

Jack recognized his face immediately.

It was the man in the photograph.

The stranger looked directly at the door, waiting patiently.

Jack unlocked it.

The man raised his eyes.

THOMAS REED: “You look just like your father.”

Jack stood motionless.

JACK: “Who are you?”

Thomas held out the envelope.

THOMAS: “I'm the man your mother has spent thirty years trying to keep away from you.”

Jack looked at the envelope.

His name was written across the front.

Underneath it were six words:

“THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR BIRTH.”

Behind Jack, Emily gasped.

Ryan whispered something that made Jack turn around.

RYAN: “Jack… don't open that here.”

Jack looked back at Thomas.

The older man stepped closer and spoke quietly.

THOMAS: “Before you read that letter, there's something you need to know about the woman you call your mother.”

He paused.

THOMAS: “Victoria isn't your biological mother.”

Jack's face went blank.

From inside the house, Emily suddenly screamed.

EMILY: “JACK, DON'T BELIEVE HIM!”

Jack turned toward his wife.

And for the first time that night, he realized that every person he loved might be hiding a different version of the same truth.

CUT TO BLACK.
